The story of The photographer

"It is an art, an emotion, a language. Everyone understands it and everyone can relate to it. For me, It is a way of life," Khary Simmonds said, describing his career as a professional photographer and graphic design artist.

Close to a decade ago, while pursuing studies in information technology at the Garmex HEART Academy, Simmonds was introduced to photography and graphic designing, which quickly became his favourite hobby.

"Back then, I had a small 8.0 megapixel digital camera, so I started to shoot a lot of photos such as at school events, of friends, while at our pastime, and so on,"Simmonds recalled.

Simmonds' passion for capturing memories and graphically enhancing them motivated him to shift from his initial career field and pursue graphic design and photography instead. It is a decision that he does not regret.

Interaction

For him, the most rewarding part of his career is interacting with clients.

"There are those times when your head is about to explode [with frustration], but it can be fun especially when the clients work so well with you. Sometimes, you will find a photographer makes twists and turns and rolls like a gymnast [to get good shots], it leaves you wondering if he is in the wrong career field," Khary said jokingly.

While Simmonds enjoys his career, he concedes that there are challenges, especially as a freelancer in today's society where most persons have access to cameras.

"Sometimes, a lot has to be sacrificed in order to get clients. You have to do a few free jobs or low budget jobs. Additionally, competition is out there and it tight bad. It is also a challenge finding the time to advertise your work or travel to actually meet with people," Simmonds lamented.

Despite the challenges, Simmonds said he is still motivated to do his job.

"There is always a drive, especially when you travel. Sometimes even on a regular day, while sitting at home, a bird comes and sits on the veranda, or you see a doctor bird nursing the flowers, a walk on the beach, the beautiful sunset, these are the things that keep me on my toes because I always want to capture the beautiful things in life," Simmonds said.

No longer a 'newbie' to his field, Simmonds has experienced enough to advise others who wish to traverse a similar career path.

"First, you must research photography (understand your passion), and then go out and start practicing because it takes a lot of work and time to perfect your art. There is no set style so you find your own style and make it your own. Do not compare yourself with other photographers, but know that there is always room for improvement and seek advice from other photographers," said Simmonds.
